Stonewood Farm sought a consultant who could toggle between grant development across a wide range of funders and savvy communications to keep their community engaged. The farm’s work is rooted in justice, spanning food access, sustainable agriculture and community development. Offering fertile grounds for stories to flourish, Stonewood Farms knew they needed a strong writer who could move fluidly between funder language and community voice.
The Work
At Stonewood Farm, I deliver on a breadth of support services including grant writing, funder prospecting, and application development across a variety of foundation funders. To keep the conversation going, I write the farm’s monthly newsletter and other communications materials, working closely with farm leadership to dig up stories that resonate with both funders and community members.
The Impact
Through a coordinated grant strategy, I secured over $93K in funding across nine awards from 10 regional and community-based funding sources. This included a three-year, $36,000~ commitment from HV Farm Fresh Food Grant and just over $20,500~ combined across three Berkshire Taconic funds.The wins granted from a diversified funding base demonstrates a strong, sustained confidence from funders, whether it’s a local garden club or multi-year community health foundations.
Westchester Mushroom Company

Like many lean early-stage businesses, Westchester Mushroom Company wanted to expand its mushroom production but lacked the internal capacity to identify competitive funding opportunities and prepare federal-quality grant applications.
The Work
A comprehensive project, it started with thorough and efficient grant prospect research where I identified Northeast SARE as the strongest funding opportunity. From there, I developed the full proposal, transparent budget justification, and a clear reporting framework. After winning the grant, I continued my work with Westchester Mushroom Company through grant administrative support.
The Impact
I successfully secured over $29,000 in USDA Northeast SARE funding for Westchester Mushroom Company’s business growth to fund marketing-friendly, temperature controlled fridges which increased sales by over 60% across a local, family-owned supermarket chain and reduced emissions and food waste from producer to consumer.
Teatown Lake Reservation

Teatown needed a consultant that was capable of managing both grant writing and day-to-day development operations across their focus areas of conservation, environmental education, and community programming.

The partnership has expanded from a volunteer engagement into an ongoing consulting relationship supporting the organization’s broader fundraising strategy while securing over $25,000+ of new grant funding.

My work with Choice Words has won over $68,000 through 3 foundation grant funds, and had a direct effect on the success of my client’s business.
